If you were fleeing from domestic violence, you’d want to have the protection order enforced no matter where you go. That is possible for Canadians in California now, thanks to a new law.

Canadian neighbors to the north may be pleased to hear that California has passed a law that will recognize restraining orders for domestic violence cases based in Canada. The law has been signed by Governor Brown and written by Senator Bill Dodd. The goal is to help victims of domestic violence while strengthening relations with Canada.

The newest signed bill states that California law enforcement officers may enforce protective orders from Canada. Since California and Canada have such strong border trade and a history of a vital partnership, it was vital that those seeking aid in preventing domestic violence could also have that aid available in the United States.

Canada has the ability to enforce domestic violence restraining orders from the United States. The Uniform Law Conference of Canada was a firm supporter of the Canadian act that allowed for the recognition of foreign protection orders. It agreed to accept the act that allowed the country to enforce American domestic violence protection orders as well as those from other countries.

The executive director of the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence has supported the bill stating that when survivors of domestic violence come to California, it is only fair that they are welcomed to a safe haven. If you are from Canada or have a protective order in the United States, you deserve protection. The court and authorities can enforce it.
