Enjoy visitation time with your kids by exploring their interests

As a noncustodial parent, it’s hard to see the smiling faces of your children when you pick them up on visitation day, because you know how badly they’ve missed you. It’s even harder to say good-bye to them after dropping them off at the other parent’s home.

This is why it’s so important to make the most of the limited amount of time you get to spend with them. Here are two perspectives that will help you do exactly that with your kids.

Get interested in their interests: Your children are so happy to spend time with you that they’ll probably do anything you want. However, if you really want to get them excited, take an interest in their interests. Even a small child who is only 5 years of age will have interests. Is it Thomas the Train? Is it Barbies? Is it LEGOs? Or, is it playing video games or going to the beach. Get plugged into what makes your children get excited about life and you will be giving them an enormous gift.

Introduce them to new interests: As the parent of your child, you can see what excites him or her. Since you have more knowledge of the world, you might know of something that will likely pique your child’s curiosity. Maybe it’s horseback riding, painting, running, rollerskating or some other activity. By introducing your kids to new things, you might help him or her discover a lifelong passion.

At the end of the day, the most important thing you can do as a noncustodial parent is to safeguard your ability to spend time with your children. Therefore, if your visitation rights are being threatened in any way, you may want to discuss your situation with one of the attorneys at our Riverside family law practice.
