If you’re going through a divorce, it’s very likely that your children are on your mind. You want to make sure they’re supported and healthy throughout the divorce process, even though there are so many changes taking place.

There are a variety of techniques you can use to help your children adjust to changes in your life. To start with, follow these tips:

Tell your children about changes now

Instead of waiting until changes happen, make sure you talk to your children about changes that will occur and what you expect to see happen. Having an open, honest discussion helps your children know what to expect and to plan for those changes.

Give your children a chance to have input

If your child is old enough to have some input into the changes taking place, try to allow that to happen. For example, if you have to move because of the divorce, you may want to include your child in choosing a new apartment if he or she is interested.

Avoid changing too much at once

It’s best to stick with as much of your child’s routine as possible. If you don’t need to make certain changes, it’s usually better not to. Don’t adjust your behavior standards or discipline preferences during the divorce; your child needs to know what to expect.

Divorces are hard on everyone involved, not just the parents going through the separation process. Remember, talking to your kids can clear the air and help them better understand where they stand with you and your spouse.
