What should you do if you want to win custody?

If you want to win child custody, there are several things you should and should not do. For example, you should always get to court on time to show the judge that you're good at keeping appointments and are taking the case seriously. You should dress professionally and present yourself in a calm manner.

One thing you don't want to do is to show that you won't work with your ex or that you have a bad attitude in court. If the judge perceived that you're the one causing problems, it will only hurt your case for custody. It's a better plan to be as accommodating as you can while exercising your rights as a parent. Be respectful of the judge and clear about what you want without becoming aggressive or accusatory.

It's particularly important not to abuse alcohol or drugs when you're with your children if you're planning to seek custody. Avoid anything that could be used against you in court; pictures of a single night out could lead to suggestions that you are an unsavory character. To add to that, don't make up stories or make baseless accusations against your ex, because if the court finds out you've lied or exaggerated stories, those actions could come back to haunt you and be used against you.

When it comes to making a claim for custody, you need to put your best foot forward. Show the court what a good parent you are as well as the kind of person you are. A good attitude can make a major difference in your case.
